The auto industry is booming – and changing
From Baden-Württemberg come automobile manufacturers as well as car component suppliers who have made substantial contributions to the history of the automobile – now just as before. Every fourth job in the automobile sector is in Baden-Württemberg. More than a fifth of the industry turnover is generated here and around 30 per cent of the investment volume of south-west industries is financed by the automobile sector. In addition, around 1,000 suppliers are based here. Aside from industry giants like Robert Bosch GmbH, ZF Friedrichshafen AG and MANN+HUMMEL GmbH, countless globally active small and medium-sized suppliers are based in Baden-Württemberg. Daimler AG and Porsche AG – two of the most innovative automobile manufacturers – are based here. Audi AG also maintains an important production and development location in the state. In the field of commercial vehicles, important companies such as Mercedes-Benz LKW (Daimler AG), Volvo Busse Deutschland GmbH and Kässbohrer Geländefahrzeug AG are represented.
Deeply rooted in the state, this industry is changing its structure. Climate change, raw material prices, the development of the markets in emergent economies, but also demographic change and urbanisation are presenting manufacturers and suppliers with new challenges.
Electric vehicles imply a redistribution of shares in the value chain. At the same time, new business fields arise from the changing mobility behaviour of the young, urban generation. The innovative strength of companies today with be decisive on the competitive position tomorrow.
