RömerkasteIl – creative ideas in a historical setting

Located high above the rooftops of Bad Cannstatt is Baden-Württemberg’s largest media centre – Römerkastell. A former cavalry barracks built on the remains of a Roman fortress for King Wilhelm of Württemberg’s dragoons in 1908–10, and used by the US forces up to the beginning of the 1990s, today Römerkastell is occupied by several media and culture providers, a wide range of educational institutions and unique residential space.

For instance the highly successful “SOKO Stuttgart” series is produced here in the studios of Bavaria Fernsehproduktion. The regional radio station Regio TV and Radio Energy broadcast live from Römerkastell, while Macromedia University of Media and Communication and the Popbüro nurture young creative talent.

Ably supported by 240 employees, DMC GmbH – Germany’s largest owner-managed e-commerce provider – develops online shop and e-business platform solutions at Römerkastell. However, many other smaller specialised agencies in the fields of advertising, media production, trade shows and events, packaging and design are also sited here, complementing the film-makers, photographers and sound designers.

Thorsten Strotmann enchants guests in the evenings in his Magic Lounge. Aside from trade shows and venues like the Kulinart and Christof Sage Medianight, the Phoenix Hall event location also hosts concerts, fashion shows, private occasions and top-flight corporate events.

Consolidating the site, the development of the Römerkastell as a district centre is now underway. A varied mix of stores, restaurants, office space and boarding house with short-let apartments will bring more life to the historic site in the future, and improve the service offering to adjacent districts.
